Tobago is a crown jewel in the Caribbean tourism empire. Warm, friendly, and well-educated people, an outstanding climate, diverse attractions (mountains, waterfalls, nature, underwater reefs, excellent scuba diving, hiking, heritage and festivals), and growing environmental consciousness, are among the features that make Tobago a unique and superior tourism destination. Tobago is truly idyllic. It is as if tourism totally forgot this place, far away from the madding crowds and almost completely ‘local’. Home of the oldest forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere, this island is paradise – the way the Caribbean used to be.
If you’re looking for a Caribbean getaway that’s unique and uncrowded, then Tobago is the destination for you. An island that is truly Caribbean, boasting both beaches and mountain resorts and attractions; an island with zero polluting industries; an island that time has forgotten. Tobago has zero slums and a world-class digital and transportation infrastructure. What is more, Tobago is the twin island counterpart of the bigger, more hip, happening, cosmopolitan and carnivalesque Trinidad.
I realised since the 1990s that Tobago is a special island. I have certainly ‘put my money where my mouth is’. I decided to invest in the future of Tobago and to develop one of the most sustainable and responsible tourism developments on the island – Villa Being and the Height of Being – perched on an 11-acre secret mountain estate, offering 270-degree views of the Caribbean Sea – no noise, no traffic, no neighbours. Just you and nature.
I would certainly recommend a visit to Tobago. In fact, why not take a ‘deep dive’; stay for a long time; buy real estate. Live the island life. Chose the Caribbean.
From diving and snorkeling to beach hopping, golf, horseback riding, birdwatching, hiking to a waterfall, and a variety of watersports, Tobago has it all. Why not learn to paint or make your own chocolate, go goat racing, watch the turtles, experience Tobago’s authentic culture, cuisine and heritage.
Here are my top picks of hotels and villas to stay in Tobago.

Tobago has an international airport. Fly direct from London Gatwick with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Flights from Frankfurt have not yet been reinstated. However, Caribbean Airlines now flies directly from New York and Barbados. From Trinidad, a 15-minute return flight costs about US$50.00, with multiple daily flights. And a boat trip lasting 2-3 hours costs US$7 per person and vehicles are also transported, starting at US $30 return.
Starting from November 2022 until May 2023, every Sunday, Condor has direct weekly flights to Tobago from Frankfurt, with connections from other European cities.
