Barbados is an
Exceptional Caribbean Island.

Barbados is an exceptional island, tourism destination and place to live, work and play for a number of reasons.

One of the highest literacy rates in the world

At 96.6% Barbados has one of the highest literacy rates in the world, according to World Population Review.  This makes it easy for the government to forge a transparent and consistent strategy that is understood by local people.  This allows the country to ‘sing from one hymnbook’.

Education for all

You will be hard-pressed to find another black-run country in the world that is so successful and so progressive.  Barbados is home to one of the world’s top 50 universities in the world, the University of the West Indies (UWI). Barbados hosts the faculties of Law, Humanities and Education, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology.

Education is provided free of charge and is compulsory between the ages of 5 and 16, and attendance is strictly enforced. The gross primary enrollment rate is generally above 90 percent.

Free Health Care

One of the attractions of Barbados is its good health care system, ranked among the best in the Caribbean. Healthcare is available to all Barbadians either publicly through a network of polyclinics around the island, which provide primary and some secondary care, while the Queen Elizabeth Hospital provides tertiary care.

A Stable Democracy

Historically an island of sugar and slavery, Barbados has enjoyed a stable and consistent democracy since its independence from the British on 30 November 1966. Democratic institutions in Barbados function well and it is an island that has had consistent great governance.  The democratic institutions work and work well in Barbados.  Run by its first female Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, Barbados continues to play a pivotal role in transforming both the economy of the Barbados and indeed, of the Caribbean region.

100% Bajan

It is interesting that in other islands of the Caribbean and even in America and Europe, emphasis is almost always on individual ethnicities/regions/religions, be it German, Italian, Spanish, French, English in Europe; or the Italian, Polish, Amish and other communities in the USA.  And in other Caribbean countries such as Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, ethnicities such as African, Indian, Chinese and White/European are also emphasized.

In Barbados, however, whether you are black or white (of African, British or European heritage) you are a Bajan first.  This unity has also impacted on the consistent stability of Barbados and also contributes to a well-organised and functioning society and economy.

An Intelligent Island

Barbados continues to be an innovator pivoting from sugar to real estate, financial services and tourism.  Barbados was the first Caribbean island to develop the long-stay visa, allowing visitors to come to Barbados and live and work up to one year, in the first instance.

In Conclusion

Barbados is an Exceptional Caribbean island.  So, if you are a digital nomad that can work from any location in the world; if you just want a safe place to grow your family and bring up your children; if you are a Caribbean nation returning home from the cold; if you have some dough (cash) and would just like a second or third or fourth location to just ‘be’, then look no further. Barbados is an ideal location to live, work, play and do business.

  1. Hello to you.
Barbados like Jamaica cultivates Breadfruit. I would like to introduce Barbados to purchase “Breadfruit Recipes Sweet and Savoury ” recipe books to be included in school libraries. The book is also educational.
    Sincerely

    Andrea Whyte
