But long before these modern icons graced the global stage, a remarkable figure from the Caribbean was already breaking barriers and etching his name into the annals of history. Did you know that the first Black Olympian, and indeed the first Black Olympic gold medalist, hailed from Haiti? His name was Constantin Henriquez.

In 1900, at the second-ever modern Olympic Games held in Paris, Constantin Henriquez de Zubiera achieved what was then unimaginable. He not only competed but also secured a gold medal as a pivotal member of the French rugby squad. This monumental achievement made him the first known Black athlete to participate in the Olympic Games and the first to stand atop the podium with a gold medal. His victory was not just a personal triumph but a powerful statement about the capabilities and contributions of Black athletes on the world stage

But Henriquez was far more than just a gifted athlete. He was a true Renaissance man whose impact extended well beyond the rugby pitch. A track and field athlete in his own right, he possessed a diverse range of talents and a deep commitment to his community. After his Olympic glory, he pursued a career in medicine, becoming a respected doctor by profession. This blend of athletic prowess and intellectual pursuit underscores the multifaceted excellence that has long characterized Caribbean luminaries.

Perhaps his most enduring legacy in his homeland was his pioneering role in introducing football (soccer) to Haiti in 1904. Recognizing the sport’s potential to unite and inspire, he co-founded the Union Sportive Haïtienne, laying the groundwork for a sporting culture that continues to thrive today. The spirit of excellence even ran in his family, with his brother, Alphonse, participating in the music competitions at the 1932 Los Angeles Games.
